STEVENAGE WESTGATE PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

A focal point to help revive town’s fortunes

Westgate is an exciting ongoing project with the promise of becoming both a landmark in its own right, and a boost to Stevenage’s profile as a shopping centre.

When WD Ltd acquired the site in 2012, the company realised there was latent potential for medium-term growth, despite an existing low retail ranking. This is in part due to Westgate’s excellent access to local transport and the major motorway network – Kings Cross Station is only 20 minutes by train, while the A1, M25 and M1 are all close by.

A key development has been restructuring the existing multi-storey car park and ground floor space to create a new, 20,000 sq ft store for H&M. Recent signings have included The Entertainer and Pavers, emphasising Westgate’s position as Stevenage’s main destination for fashion shopping.

Going forward

Stevenage Borough Council has plans for around 1,500 new homes within a five-minute walk of Westgate Shopping Centre over the next three years. Together with several other major residential developments, it’s clear there are opportunities to attract new shoppers and establish the centre’s reputation as a major retail outlet.

WD Ltd intends to explore these possibilities in full, along with ways to maximise the excellent local transport links to the benefit of Westgate’s future.
